Rabat

Rabat

Rabat was founded in the 12th century and has been the capital city of the Moroccan kingdom since 1912.  In the 17th century, Yacoub el-Mansour, the great Almohades conqueror chose it to be the symbol of his splendor. History has left its mark upon Rabat, and the city honors those who made it.  It is a town of trees and flowers, and many monumental gateways, including the Gate of the Ambassadors and the Oudayas Kasbah Gate.  The nearby Maamora forest and the many beaches are popular tourist attractions, particularly during the summer.

City highlights:

The Oudayas Kasbah: Rabat’s Kasbah, or fortified city wall, offers a picturesque view of the North Atlantic coast. Located on the edge of the old city, from here you can take a path from the walls down to the beach, ramble through 17th Andalusian gardens or marvel at Bab l'Oudayas, the Kasbah’s elaborate 12th-century door.  The Kasbah is quite easy to navigate on your own unlike the labyrinth streets of walled Fez

The Oudaya museum: is situated in the opulent lodge built by Moulay Ismail in the XVIIth century as his Rabat residence. The garden is the first of its masterpieces. The exuberance of the vegetation softens the strict geometry of its paths. Flower beds, fountains and ramparts make it the very finest of all Andalusia gardens

The Archaeological Museum: is one of the most sumptuous in Morocco and should certainly not be missed.

The King Mohammed V Mausoleum: is an outstanding example of traditional Moroccan architecture and houses the remains of Moroccan kings Mohammed V and Hassan II.

The Tour Hassan: Rabat most famous landmark is the Tour Hassan, a 44 m tower built during the reign of Almohad ruler Yacoub El Mansour in the late 12th century. Dominating what should have been one of the greatest mosques in the Muslim world, was meant to be built even higher but was left incomplete upon El Mansour’s death.

Chellah: The old ruined citadel Chellah Just south of the city is the site of the ancient Roman settlement known as Sala Colonia. The remains you’ll find here date back to the Merinide settlement that flourished in the area during the 13th century. Chellah is an intriguing archaeological attraction.
